about

Formed in 1977 Sudden Fun and other like-minded bands were a refreshing change from the disco scene happening in the San Francisco Bay Area in that time period. You'd see all of these dudes with their silver lamé jackets, their gold medallions, and hairy chests: white guys with afros, bell bottoms, and platform shoes. Then Sudden Fun appears, black hair, black clothing-a complete revolution against the disco generation.

They self-released a four-song EP in 1979 and had the track "(I Can't Wait for the) Weekend Show" featured on 415 Music. The group's Derek Ritchie was interviewed for Bill Kopp's 2021 book Disturbing the Peace: 415 Records and the Rise of New Wave. The 8-song set was recorded at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco on March 30, 1980 and features 6 originals and their versions of The Rolling Stones classic "Out of Time" and Ron Wood's "I Can Feel the Fire".

The release is the latest volume of recordings produced by SF club sound engineer Terry Hammer that is part of Liberation Hall's 'Sounds from the San Francisco Underground' live show series.
